PATIENT INFORMATION
q:wHAT IS eNDODONTICS?

A:Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry which involves treatment of the pulp and surrounding tissues of the tooth. The portion of the tooth visible above the gum line is called the 'crown', and the portion hidden from view beneath the gum line is called the 'root'. The exterior surfaces of the tooth are covered by several layers of hard protective tissue. These layers protect the interior canals of the tooth which contain a pulp made up of soft tissue, blood vessels and nerves. When the protective barriers of a tooth are compromised due to deep decay, cracks or other trauma, harmful bacteria can become introduced into the pulp of the tooth and lead to significant dental problems. Inflamed dental pulp can lead to pain, swelling, sensitivity and infection - which, if left untreated, may lead to tooth loss. When this happens, an endodontist can work to remove the diseased dental pulp with the goal of alleviating discomfort and saving the tooth. Some of the surgical procedures most commonly performed by an endodontist include root canal therapy, endodontic retreats and apicoectomies.
q:why seek treatment from
an endodontist?
A:By choosing to seek care from an endodontist, you are ensuring that you are putting your oral health in the best hands possible. An endodontist has received extensive education and training focusing specifically on endodontic procedures. In addition to their time spent in Dental School (typically four years), an experienced general dentist who wishes to specialize in endodontics must also complete specialty training through an endodontic residency program. Following a competitive application and acceptance process, endodontic residency typically takes an additional two to three years to complete. During this time, he or she receives extensive training on the diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp using specialized equipment and procedures.
In addition to earning his PhD in Pharmacology, Doctorate of Dental Surgery and specialty certification in Endodontics, Dr. Nick Hargreaves is also a Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Endodontists who choose to pursue this professional distinction must reach beyond their specialty training and pass a series of rigorous written, case-based and oral exams - demonstrating advanced knowledge, superior skills in diagnosis and treatment as well as a commitment to lifelong learning which signifies the highest level of expertise in the field. Only about 25% of Endodontists nationwide are Board Certified.

q: wHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF
ENDODONTIC TREATMENT?

A:When trying to decide on a treatment path for a compromised tooth, two common options are either endodontic treatment, or extraction and replacement via an implant. When possible, seeking an endodontic solution is often preferable. Endodontic treatment is focused on preserving the natural tooth, and is usually completed in one or two appointments. In contrast, dental implant treatment begins with the extraction of the damaged tooth and involves a multi-step process comprised of a series of surgical procedures. This lengthy and expensive process (implant costs are generally two to three times more expensive than endodontic procedures) can take anywhere from six to twelve months to complete. Because implants do not have the same attachment or innate immunity as a natural tooth, they can result in a gradual loss of supporting bone over time. This means that if an implant fails, subsequent attempts to place a new implant can be challenging.
Studies have shown no significant difference in the clinical success of an implant procedure versus endodontic treatment.
